Farrell hated being at home alone without Gilly. His heart ached for her when she was absent and he tried to spend as little time as possible in the house.

As soon as he woke, he dressed, made coffee in the kitchen and headed for the barn. With Ardal around, Farrell didn’t do his fair share of barn work, but that’s the way Ardal liked it. The barn was Ardal’s domain and he took care of both horses. One less thing for Farrell to worry about.

His turn now. He fed them, put them in the corral and ran back to the house to see if the coffee was ready. He glanced around for any sign of the black wolf and Rowan but the yard was empty. Too empty for his liking.

“Come on, Lulu. I’ll make you a fried egg.”

The big bloodhound came running in the sliding door and tore across the spotless kitchen tiles with wet muddy paws.

“Jeeze, did you have to do that?” She wagged her tail.

After breakfast and a quick wipe of the kitchen floor, Farrell gathered up his gear and headed out to do the notification for Heather Charles.

The only relative Farrell could come up with was a brother in Flatonia. Not too far to drive. He backed out into the street and headed for Route 95 south.
